Wet weather delays wild chanterelle production in Lithuania

After a long, wet and rainy spring and early summer, the wild chanterelle harvest in Lithuania is taking a little longer than usual to take off. Along with delays, the weather has also caused losses of around 25%, estimates Marius Juškevičius from JSC Liedra and JSC M&KO.

"We are sorting what we have available now and exporting to Germany. Wild mushrooms are really popular in that market. Prices are good, the current price is €7/kg, which might be slightly higher than last year, but not by much." shared Marius.

"We have received so many calls from people from all different countries requesting mushrooms because there seems to be a shortage of wild chanterelles everywhere. We are going to start sending shipments from Russia soon, currently, Russian companies are only selling to Moscow."

The season started 23 June and will last until the beginning/middle of September.

"We had already sent four trucks full of shipments by this time last year (around 20 tons) and this season we have only sent a couple. So right now, it is a waiting game, waiting for things to pick up, I think that this should be the case by next week." said Marius Juškevičius.

The mushrooms are offered in wooden boxes and plastic with sizes ranging from 250gr, 500gr, 1 kg and 3 kg and plastic boxes of 2.5 kg. Marius Juškevičius said that the wooden boxes are ideal for mushrooms and most in demand for the European market, although he has been looking into other options for other types of packaging based on new markets they would like to enter.
