Phuong Tran:

“Chinese and European consumers want avocados of comparable quality”

"The best avocados from Vietnam come from the province of Dak Lak, in the Central Highlands," argues Phuong Tran, of Min Na. There are about 6 million avocado trees in this province, where about 400,000 tonnes are expected to be harvested this year. "Approximately 50,000 small growers are devoted to avocado farming," continues Phuong. "The acreage is expanding every year."

In this Southeast Asian country, avocados are divided into three categories, depending on the oil content. Phuong explains that "the Bo sap has the highest oil content and a deep yellow colour; the Bo Mo has slightly lower oil content and a yellow colour, and the Bo Nuoc has the lowest oil content and a white-yellow colour." The season lasts from April to August. At present, prices stand around $ 3 per kilo and are slightly higher than last year.

Countries in the region are the main markets for these avocados. "China and Korea are our main markets and they are becoming increasingly important. Europe is the second biggest market for us. We export to Europe by air." According to Phuong, Chinese and European consumers demand a comparable quality. The difference is that MRL regulations in Europe are much stricter. "Our customers there also require more from us, such as a Global GAP certification."

The company Mi Na is specialised in the import and export of different products. In addition to avocados, the range includes dragon fruit, limes, red peppers and cashew nuts. The limes are exported to Europe, Japan and Korea, among other destinations.
