Mexico: Yucatan could send agribusiness products to Russia

Yucatan could start exporting agribusiness products to Russia within a six-month period, stated the Secretary of Industrial Development, Ernesto Herrera Novelo.

After making a trip to make contacts in that country, the state official said that large Russian consumers were interested in tomato, lemon, fruits, vegetables, chicken, pork, and seafood. Herrera Novelo said that Russia had made important changes in its food processes and that the opening of trade and economic development had now established the condition of a greater quantity of fresh produce, mainly produced by hydroponics.

He also said that he had spoken with government officials who had told him that Russia had a great demand for fresh products that it bought from Europe and Latin American countries, opening an opportunity for Yucatan's products.

This commercial contact could be established immediately for local producers looking for alternative markets.

Herrera Novelo said that they would immediately seek the possibility of transporting the products from that state to Cuba, where the Aeroflot airline has two daily flights to Moscow, which would allow the products to arrive in Russia within 24 hours.

Russia bought products from companies in the United States, but the differences between the two countries has led them to cut off relations. Now Russia is looking for new suppliers and, hopefully, Yucatan may be among the parties shipping products to that country.
