Borja Piedra, Huerta Tropical:

"Spain: "The Costa Tropical is as good a producer as any other country"

The climatological conditions south of Malaga and Granada are suitable for the cultivation of certain tropical fruits, like avocados, mangoes or cherimoyas. "I am not originally from Granada, although I have lived here for many years and, relatively recently, I discovered that we had this type of plantations on the coast. Then I thought that there might be more people in the rest of the country who didn't know this either," comments Borja Piedra, manager of the company Huerta Tropical; hence the idea of starting to promote these products, highlighting their qualities and health benefits and trying to give them an added value.

"I won't take part in the debate on which country produces the better fruit, but I do believe that it is better to eat an avocado that has been grown and harvested in Spain, rather than one that had to travel for 40 days and be moved from one refrigerated chamber to another, or from one means of transport to another, until it reaches the consumer and viceversa," explains Piedra. Their project is based, mainly, on collaborating with small producers, knowing where the product comes from and making its origin perfectly traceable for the consumer. "This is just another of the services we offer to our customers," he adds.

This company was created with the idea of delivering tropical fruit to the homes of small consumers; however, "given the requests that I have been receiving in recent years, we are considering the option of starting another line of business to ship the products outside of Spain," affirms Piedra. In fact, he assures that it can often be cheaper to send a pallet to any other destination in Europe than a box with tropical fruits anywhere in Spain.
