China: Market demand decides which apples are procured

"Last year, some of the production locations for apples suffered from hail, which caused a reduction in output. This year, so far, there have been no natural disasters, so there is an ample supply. The quality of the fruit is also rather good and, taking into account the current circumstances, forecasts show that volumes will be up this year. The current retail price and and last year's base price are at on a level", says miss Zoe from the trading company Global Food Source in Shanxi province.

"Being a storage facility for fruit and vegetables, our operations combine processing and foreign trade. After we have purchased apples from all large producers that provide top quality, we export through the ports in Qingdao and Shenzhen. Under our private label 'YULA', those apples are sent to South Asia, South-East Asia and countries in the Middle-East. The varieties that we operate ourselves are Green Gala, Red Gala, Red Star, Green Qinguan and more. Currently we are in the season for Green Gala, but the season for Red Gala will start at the end of July. Following closely is the season for Fuji apples, between the end of September and April."

"Based on the demand for different market products, we have opted to procure from different producers. We already do this at the very start of our operations. The apples for the Bangladeshi market, for example, come from producers in the regions of Yuncheng city and Liquan city, and apples for the Indian market originate from producing locations in Shandong province. Given these circumstances, we persevere in maintaining good quality and trying to improve ourselves according to the requirements of the systems and markets in all those different countries. Nowadays, our apple exports to India have not suffered at all."

"Chinese apples are becoming increasingly popular in the Southeast Asian and Middle-Eastern markets. This is mainly because, first of all, the output of producers in Southeast Asia and the Middle-East is limited, so they rely mostly on imports. Moreover, because of the advances in growing technologies, the quality of Chinese apples is getting better and better, and are still very sweet, have a good level of thickness and a smooth skin."
