"Demand dragon fruit in Vietnam stable for the past few years"

Lavite Company Limited, a 3 year old Vietnamese company, produces and sells both white flesh and red flesh dragon fruits in the local market. According to Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tuyet, “We sell fresh dragon fruit that is considered processed, despite using natural and organic procedures. In the future our company should be working with organic certifications."

Vietnam is known to have dragon fruit as one of its top exports. Nguyen says, “Dragon fruits cost around 0.7 USD per kg during its peak season of June to October. If a company has a good reputation and good quality of the fruit, they can sell a kilogram for three times the price. Prices would change during the other months, specifically when there is competition from summer fruits or fruits such as mango, durian, etc.”

In Vietnam, the dragon fruit is typically consumed fresh and sold usually pre-cut or in the form of juice. It is popular among parents and schools as it is mainly consumed by children. According to Nguyen, “Schools and parents feed the fruit to their children because it is really good for digestion and it is easy for small kids to eat."

“The demand for dragon fruit in Vietnam has been stable, but not really growing over the past few years. We have seen a shift in the popularity of white flesh to red flesh dragon fruit. In the western world, there clearly is a lack of exposure for the fruit, but hopefully this will change within the next few years”, Nguyen concludes.
