China: Dramatic drop for Yunnan onion production
Farmers harvesting onions
Harvested onions
"Onions from Yunnan, the largest production area for onions in China, usually enter the market between February and July. This year, at the beginning of the production season, there was a drop in production, which made that the price increased dramatically overnight to 1.2 yuan/500g. Later, when a large quantity of Shandong onions entered the market, the Yunnan price started to drop, and gradually went back to normal. Now it is similar to last year's price. It is estimated that at the end of July, which is the end of the season, the price will go up again."
Red onions
"Our company holds over 100 hectares (1000 mu) of red onion fields in Yunnan. The annual production volume is over 10 million kg. Apart from onions, we also produce fruit and corn. Currently, we mainly sell our onions to large scale vegetable distributors in Hunan, Guilin, Guangxi and Fujian. With the financial and technological help of the Yunnan Department of Agriculture, we want to increase our production area to 200 hectares (2000 mu). While the domestic market is steadily developing, we are looking for partners on the South-East Asian and Middle East markets to open the doors for export to these markets."
