China: Rainstorms cause steep rise in vegetable prices
In the past few days, rainstorms have plagued Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hunan and Hubei, causing disastrous floods, damaging farmlands, and destroying produce. Simultaneously, we have never seen such a change in the vegetable price in one year. All of a sudden, it has started to rise, by an average of 50%, and sometimes even 100%.
On 25 June, the vegetable fields of Mr. Gan, from Yanjiang village at Nantuo Street in Tianxin district, Changsha city in Hunan, were flooded, leaving him completely helpless.
Because of these rainstorms, vegetable farmers are in a tough spot, both hopeful and afraid. Because of the saturation in the vegetable industry, the price has no way to recover. It solely depends on the rainstorms. If the rainstorms reach you, it could mean total destruction. Then there would be no more hope for this year.
