No boredom with smoothies and fruit skewers
At the Lidl Fruit School, 20 dieticians playfully teach the third and fourth graders basic knowledge about fruits, vegetables and health-conscious nutrition. In the practical part of the lessons, they make their own smoothie and learn how tasty healthy meals can be. Last year, the Lidl Fruit School was able to excite 5,000 students: 10,000 fruit skewers and hundreds if liters of smoothies were the result of the initiative all over Germany.
Making nutrition sensible for society
"Only every ninth child eats enough fruits and veggies - and what kids don't learn from early on, they're not going to take into their adult life. Health in children and adults is often threatened by wrong, high-calorie meals. This is a problem in our society that we want to address in our Fruit School," says Prof. Dr. Thomas Haak, chief physician at the Diabetes-Center in Bad Mergentheim and member of the board of diabetesDE - the German diabetes aid. "Vegetables and fruits are important, because they supply us with vitamins and fibre but only a few calories. It makes sense to address these issues in elementary school, since it reaches kids from all social walks of life there," the expert adds. According to new data by the health reporting department, every tenth child in Germany is obese when they start elementary school (source: Mokrozensus, cited in 13. DGE-Ernährungsbericht 2017). Obesity is one of the main causes for type II diabetes, an illness which around seven million people in Germany are already affected by.
