This is despite the fact that volume overall for mushrooms is up for Basciani Foods. “Volume at the farm level is up about ½ lb. per square foot,” he says. “So springtime crops are a little bit heavier than last year, but the extremely mild winter we had has all growers in Pennsylvania worried about diseases overtaking our crops this summer. We didn’t have a cold enough winter to kill them off. “
No shortage on demand
That said, Basciani thinks pricing will be on the upswing as temperatures rise. “Prices go up mid-summer, mid-fall and mid-holiday season,” he adds. He will also start seeing his regional sales shift as it tends to do this time of year. “The sales start changing,” he says. “Southern sales will drop a little bit such as Florida. So my sales in Minnesota will start going up and my sales in Florida might dip a little bit. Mushroom consumption and sales are very regional.”
