Ecuador will be able to send fresh pitahaya to the US starting in July

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has published the Final Rule for the Importation of fresh pitahaya fruit from Ecuador to the continental United States in the Federal Register of this country, which will enter into force on July 20, 2017 (30 days after its publication), after a delegation from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) visited the production sites and collection centers for fresh pitahaya fruit with technicians of AGROCALIDAD's National Fruit Fly Management Project between August 29 and September 2, 2016.

The export of Ecuadorian pitahaya to the continental United States may take place after the signing of the Operational Work Plan (PTO), i.e. the document establishing the guidelines for production, protection, export and shipping certification, which are of mandatory compliance by the importing and exporting countries, producers, exporters and other actors in the production chain.

At the moment this document is under review by APHIS and expectations are that it will be signed by the corresponding authorities of APHIS, AGROCALIDAD and the representative of the exporters in the coming days. Once the document is signed, Ecuador will be able to start shipping fresh pitahaya to the continental United States.
