Switzerland: Coop Number 1 in Sustainability Worldwide

In an evaluation of 148 international retailers, the rating agency oekom research has awarded Coop with the title of most sustainable retail trader worldwide.

This is not the first time though. What makes this year special? Well, for the first time the chain was not just evaluated for their activities inland but their international activities were also considered. And Coop did well in all departments.

148 retailers were tested by the independent rating agency oekom research from Munich, Germany. One hundred criteria were used to analyze how the different chains work. Among the countless active retail traders, Coop was the most sustainable. It was followed by the British retailers Marks&Spencer in second and Tesco in third place.

Sustainability doesn't end at a border
In the current evaluation the businesses weren't just evaluated for their activities in the country of origin (Switzerland in the case of Coop) but also for those in other countries. This includes a number of businesses by Transgourmet or Bell, which are operated in Germany, Poland, Romania and Russia. "We are happy to have scored so well in all these aspects, and we're glad to be on the right track," says Joos Sutter, chairman of the board at Coop.

Good in all areas – great in some
Coop was evaluated in a number of different areas. Their social and economical added value was especially good, according to oekom research. "That's important to our costumers. The most important thing is that they found a credible retail trader in Coop and trust us to do what we promise. It is deeds instead of words for us," says Joos Sutter in reaction to the great partial result. Furthermore, oekom praised the extensive sustainability management throughout the whole supply chain, the strategy for sustainability for the entire Coop Group for coping with climate change, and the strategies to minimize the impact their product range has on the environment.

Affirmation and Incentive
The top results show that Coop did the right thing, when they decided to have sustainability deeply embedded in their company values. This is a great motivation to do important things for humans, animals and nature. For more information about Coop's involvement: www.taten-statt-worte.ch.
