REWE launches Online-Marketplace test with selected customers and partners

For groceries, REWE is already the first name many customers think of. The retail chain has 3,000 stores in Germany and also operates an online-shopping service where products can either be picked up or delivered.

In the area of online-trade with fresh produce, the REWE delivery service is the market leader (IFH 2016). Now their operations are being expanded by another element: REWE is launching an online marketplace and offers exclusively selected partner products. In the future, customers can buy these in a collective shop either seperately or in combination with REWE delivery products. After shopping at REWE.de, the goods are being delivered to the customers' homes via postal services. In July the first tests will be conducted with five selected partners and 1000 customers, after that, new partners and customers will be added gradually.

"It's not only fresh produce which is a matter of trust. Customer's value quality in all of their orders of other products - like foodstuffs, kitchen and household items - especially when ordering online. That is why all partners are chosen accordingly and have to pass an extensive process of qualification," says Dr. Jean-Jaques van Ooosten, Chief Digital Officer of the REWE Group.

"It was important to us that customers have a centralized way of doing their shopping for their daily needs - groceries and products for their homes and kitchens. In the future, they can order fresh produce like fruits and vegetables, but also meat, cold meats and cheeses or frozen products via the REWE delivery service. At the same time they will also be able to buy regional and international specialties - toys, pet foods, perfume, cosmetics or gifts online and have it delivered," explains Van Oosten. Partners for the test phases are (among others): Dallmayr, Käfer, Lieferello, nu3, myToys, ZooRoyal, Weinfreunde, Springlane, Butlers, Alternate, Geschenke.de and Idee Creativmarkt.

"We trust in our culture of trying things out and involve our partners as well as interested customers in our tests from early on. Their feedback will directly be used for further development. Because after all, it is about improving the quality of life for our customers with these innovations."
