Even though the United States is a prime destination for Peruvian agricultural exports, there are other very important markets for Peru and several big competitors that are interested in Peru's fresh food offer.
According to information from the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (Agap), during the first four months of this year, the main buyer of Peruvian fresh fruit and vegetables was Europe, as 46.6% of total shipments were sent to this market.
North America (with the US as the main market) ranked second with a 31.7% share. It was followed by the emerging Asian region with 15.9%, and South America with 2.5% of the total.
Ricardo Polis, the president of Agap, said that Peru had to diversify in order to improve its supply of fresh food. He stated that the country could bet on nut products, such as almonds, chestnuts, pecans, and walnuts.
In fact, he said, Peru was already conducting tests with almonds to discover if the product would work. Another alternative, he added, is the kiwi, as it has a high international demand.
