"We made a few new contacts and met our historic clients on the first day. It's our second year at the fair and we are rather pleased, because it's the perfect way to meet British distributors. Our company can supply from one to 100 pallets of all kinds of products because we have suppliers from all over Italy," explained Luigi Catalano, manager of Gala Fruit.
Catalano says that the British market is rather demanding but that, if you gain the trust of distributors, then they are willing to pay a fair price. "We entered the market in 1998 and a few years ago started exporting without intermediaries. This way, we can control the chain better and pay suppliers a fair price for their produce."
During this season, overlaps caused an oversupply of summer fruit which led to a drop in prices, "but high quality produce destined for abroad always manages to get good prices. Our British clients know that, after placing an order, we can reach their distribution platform in 36 hours. Our produce is always fresh."
At the moment, the British market is demanding melons, Saturn peaches, apricots, white peaches, curly lettuce and tomatoes. "We sell beefsteak tomatoes as well as a lot of cherry tomatoes cultivated with a hydroponic technique - they reach 11° Brix and have a shelf-life of 7 days."
