Erik de Jong (Jongfresh):

"Bunched radishes selling well thanks to Scandinavian midsummer festivals"

There is a good demand for radishes at the moment. "In the spring we did have a bit of a dip. It was, of course, very hot in May which meant there were too many radishes on the market. We had to do our utmost to move stock. The market has, however, recovered well", says Erik de Jong of Jongfresh.

"It is at present neither a very good or very bad year. The sale of loose radishes is a bit difficult. Bunched radishes, especially, are selling well thanks to the midsummer festival in Scandinavia. I am also not anticipating any major problems in the next while", says Erik. He is the third generation at the De Jong family radish farm. They started as the first radish growers in the Netherlands in 1954.

Jongfresh has been growing speciality varieties such as white radishes, with tips and icicles. In the past year the grower has added purple radishes in the assortment. "These are really small volumes, but they are certainly a nice addition to our assortment. It is a real spring product, so we have stopped growing for now. Given the reactions, we will definitely have them again."

Jongfresh, as one of the few radish farms, sell all their product themselves and this suits the grower well. "We are not bound to a a certain sales point and we have the freedom to experiment and expand. Our sales are primarily aimed at wholesalers and exporters and we also export to neighbouring countries ourselves."
