China: Lychee production in Dongguan suffers typhoon damage

Dongguan's most common variety of lychee should be hitting the market next week, but just before the finish line a typhoon struck. Because of the disaster, harvest of lychees will be smaller and anticipated price will be higher than last year. According to Lychee Association, the production area covers more than 40% of land where lychees are grown in Dongguan, more than any other species.

In the first half of this year, heavy rains were more frequent than usual, which caused a lot of damage to the trees. This year, the crops had suffered from two disasters before it finally riped. A storm earlier this year in May caused 20% of fruits to crack and another 20% were damaged during the last typhoon. In other words, farmers lost 40% of their total harvest.
