Joaquín Caparrós:

"Spain: "Real competition is in prices, not in the origin"

Prices not only oscillate throughout the campaign, but must also face the pressure from the volumes supplied by the different producers and marketers. Faced with the question of which country can offer a Piel de Sapo melon with similar qualities to the Spanish in the international market, Caparrós assures that "it is not a question of competing with other origins, but with the prices offered. And this fight can also be against your neighbour."

So far, Almeria's Piel de Sapo melons have been shipped mainly to the Italian market (65%), and to the UK and France in smaller amounts. "Each company sets the prices for their melons according to their criteria and the market situation. We are currently selling them for 0.55 Euro at origin," comments Caparrós.

Almeria's Piel de Sapo melon campaign has so far developed normally, at least "more or less in the same way as last year," comments Caparrós. "What is certain is that it seems that sales of greenhouse-grown Piel de Sapo melons are stagnating a little, as they are giving way to those coming from open-ground plantations," he adds.
