Ghana: Growing demand for dried mango in the US
Their main product is the new certified organic dried mango, but they also have a big interest in certified dried pineapples. Even though there are several countries that produce and export dried mangoes, Americans are looking for those with a certification.
"Undoubtedly, there is a growing demand for dried mango in the United States; as an appetiser and as a healthy and nutritious food," says Bernard Walker, supply chain consultant for The Rene Group. Customers are looking for dried products such as mangoes, pineapples, bananas and coconuts as an alternative healthy snack.
Once the harvest has been completed, mango growers put some of the production aside for processing. There are processes that focus directly on the processing, since the entire chain has to be certified by a qualified certifying agent with the USDA, so the certified processor will be in charge of carrying out the drying process. In this case, traceability is the key to maintaining the traceability throughout the chain.
Walker works with a company that is in the process of obtaining the organic certification to be able to ship the certified organic dried mangoes from Ghana. Moreover, they have plans to expand their capacity to offer dried mangoes from other Latin American countries. Due to the rising demand, they are looking for new quality suppliers in order to create long-term business relationships.
