Their production and export is carried out 365 days a year, though it is sometimes affected by climatic changes, such as the frequent rains, since these vegetables are perishable. The price of oriental vegetables is usually higher than that of conventional vegetables because they cover a very specific market niche and they tend to be marketed to a particular type of consumer.
Currently, the Dominican Republic is competing with other countries such as Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico, which according to Daysi A. González, produce higher volumes, making competition tougher, but nevertheless, the customers remain loyal to the flavour and quality that make the Dominican produce stand out. "Furthermore, there is sufficient demand for everyone."
A problem oriental vegetables are facing is the management of pests such as thrips palmi, but they have learned to deal with it and make proper use of pesticides, working in partnership with the competent authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture to offer a quality, residue-free product.
