ADEXVO, Dominican Republic

Lower demand for oriental vegetables due to pests

The Dominican Association of Exporters of Oriental Vegetables, Inc. (ADEXVO), founded in 1994, is a private, non-profit organization that brings together 37 oriental vegetable exporting companies, which send their shipments to markets in the United States, Canada and Europe. Some of its main products are Chinese aubergines, Hindu aubergines, Hindu & Chinese cundeamor, Chinese musu, spicy chilies, tindoras and exotic fruits, among others.

Their production and export is carried out 365 days a year, though it is sometimes affected by climatic changes, such as the frequent rains, since these vegetables are perishable. The price of oriental vegetables is usually higher than that of conventional vegetables because they cover a very specific market niche and they tend to be marketed to a particular type of consumer.

Currently, the Dominican Republic is competing with other countries such as Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico, which according to Daysi A. González, produce higher volumes, making competition tougher, but nevertheless, the customers remain loyal to the flavour and quality that make the Dominican produce stand out. "Furthermore, there is sufficient demand for everyone."

A problem oriental vegetables are facing is the management of pests such as thrips palmi, but they have learned to deal with it and make proper use of pesticides, working in partnership with the competent authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture to offer a quality, residue-free product.

Also, Daysi explains that, as a future plan, they are experimenting with the introduction of new products to the various markets, carrying out a study of the demand in order to expand the range and also the niches, and thus increase exports.
