Grufesa:

Spain: Fewer kilos of strawberries sold, but higher revenue

Grufesa, a company from Moguer, Huelva, devoted to the production and marketing of berries, has closed the strawberry campaign these days with a slightly lower volume sold for fresh consumption than last season, but with an increase in turnover, which is forecast to reach around 45 million Euro

In its campaign balance, the manager of Grufesa, Carlos Cumbreras, has described the campaign as "positive" in terms of production, quality and prices.

"In general terms, and despite some setbacks, we can say that it has been a good year for Grufesa and, therefore, we can feel moderately satisfied. We have managed to sell a similar volume and exceed the previous year's turnover, so we can say that the campaign has gone reasonably well," states Cumbreras, although he warns that "we cannot fall into conformity, but must continue to strive to improve our product, as that has been one of the main reasons for our growth and recognition in recent years."

One of the keys to the good results achieved again this year by Grufesa's fruit has been "its fully sustainable and environmentally-friendly work philosophy, which has served to strengthen its commitment to a quality, safe and sustainable production." Testament to this are the innovative projects in which it is constantly involved, with which it aims to guarantee the supply of natural, tasty and healthy fruit, as is the case of Food Chain Partnership of Bayer CropScience, which has accredited it this campaign as the first company in the world that manages to certify 100% of its almost 500 hectares with its Add-on module, developed as an additional certification to the GLOBAL GAP standard; or the IG4 crop monitoring program, which has helped its partners reduce their water consumption for irrigation by another 20% and allowed the implementation of precision agriculture.

In fact, the remarkable production and marketing levels of recent campaigns have had a favourable socio-economic impact in Moguer and the region, with the hiring of local labourers to ensure the good development of the campaign and the launch of its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program 'Cultivate your values'; a pioneering awareness-raising campaign by the educational community from which more than 1,200 students from Moguer and Mazagón have benefited.
