Taiwan: Aiwen mangoes - high market entrance

"Last year, due to the effects of the harsh weather and typhoons, the Aiwen mangoes from Taiwan had to deal with a significant reduction in production volume. This year, as the weather conditions were favourable, that has recovered to the level of a few years back. The production season starts at the end of May and will last until August," says Mr. Zhang Jiao from Gaonong Taiwan Agricultural Products in Shanghai.

"Taiwanese Aiwen mangoes are mainly produced in Pingtung province and in the Tianan region. Because of different geographical characteristics, climate and soil, both regions have a different production season. As a result, the fruits from these two regions are also different. The Aiwen mangoes produced in the Pingtung region are relatively small and they go on sale in May and June. The Tainan mangoes' production season closely follows, starting in June and ending in August."

"The Aiwen mangoes have a long oval shape that becomes sharper near the crown of the fruit. The colour of the peel is like that of a red apple. The fruit flesh is fragrant, sweet and very juicy. With an outstanding quality and almost no fibers, it is a top-notch produt. In the past few years, the selling prices and volumes have been growing year by year in mainland China. There are several reasons for this. First of all, Aiwen mangoes are very fragrant and sweet with a very appealing look. Secondly, Aiwen mangoes are difficult to preserve. In the process of transporting the mangoes from Taiwan, quite some losses are suffered."

"Apart from the 200 hectares of cultivation ground we own in Taiwan's Gaoxiong county, we also cooperate with several farmers. Our outstanding Aiwen mangoes are mainly sold through traditional sales channels in large-scale supermarkets and wholesale markets of first-tier cities. A small amount serves as a supply to household buyers through online channels."

"The company of Gaonong Taiwan Agricultural Products in Shanghai was established in September 2010. It is the mainland branch of the Taiwan Gaoxiong Agricultural Development company. As a result, there is an inseparable cooperation with the farmers' cooperatives of Gaoxiong, the farmers' cooperatives of Taiwan and fruit and vegetable cultivation grounds of these cooperatives. We work hard to export Taiwan's agricultural products to mainland China, to sell them and promote them. At present, the fruits and vegetables included in the company's scope of operations are: Aiwen mangoes, pineapple, guava, wax apples, candied jujube, papaya, pomelo and several other products."
