"Spain: "Cherry prices are 50% lower than when the campaign started"

"This is something that no longer surprises us; it happens almost every year," explains Pilar Arnal, partner of Frutas Bayo. The company states that the price of cherries this campaign, just like last year, stood at 4 Euro per kilo. "We were happy with the price; it was a good start," adds Arnal. However, after three weeks since the campaign started, this figure has dropped by about 50%," explains the representative of Frutas Bayo.

The figures provided correspond to the domestic market, since that is the one in which Frutas Bayo is selling at the moment, given that it is a family business. Arnal affirms that "we are selling in domestic markets like Mercabarna or, since recently, Mercabilbao," as that was the next logical step to continue growing hand in hand with its new generation of producers.

Frutas Bayo has 4 hectares for the production of cherries of various varieties, as this fruit is not their main product. Nevertheless, this "gives us the advantage of being able to take care of them in a more personal manner, devoting more work and time to them. The production is consequently smaller than that of our renowned peaches."
