Gaetano Modugno, manager of Evergreen:

"Italy: "Green figs sold for 3.30 Euro"

Italy is a big consumer of this fruit, so the prices are practically the same both in the domestic and the international market. "At this time, a kilo of green figs, which are the only ones available at the moment, costs around 3.30 Euro; a price that we try to keep stable throughout the season," explains Modugno, of Evergreen. This Italian company harvests about 4,100 kilos every day, and the fruit is immediately sold to its customers. "The total volume depends on the year and the weather conditions," clarifies the firm's representative.

Modugno comments that "we are currently selling figs from the region of Apulia, mainly in Italy." In fact, 70% of the production they have is sold in the domestic market and the remaining 30% is shipped to the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg and Germany.

"Last year we had a very good green and black fig campaign, since there was a lot of fruit and a great demand," explains Modugno. However, "this year we still have to wait and see, because we are only three weeks into the campaign and we still have to start marketing the black figs, which will be available within 10 days," he adds.
