Mexico doubles raspberry production in three years

The production of 'Made in Mexico' raspberries has doubled in the last three years, from 35,589 tons in 2014 to 73,556 tons in 2016, thanks to the incentives the Government of the Republic allocates to the country's agricultural sector, stated the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA).

Based on statistics from the Agricultural Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), production increased by 106.7 percent or 37,967 tons.

The Average Annual Growth Rate (TMCA) in these three years was 27.4 percent, and the average production stood at 54,082 tons.

Between 2015 and 2016, the "Made in Mexico" raspberry production grew by 38.5 percent, from 53,101 tons to more than 73,500 tons obtained last year, which represents an additional volume of 20,455 tons.

This berry is produced in eight entities: Baja California, Colima, Mexico City, Hidalgo, Jalisco, State of Mexico, Michoacan, and Puebla.

The three main producing states are Jalisco, Baja California and Michoacan; together, these entities account for 99.8 percent of the national production.

Last year, Jalisco produced 56,013 tons; Baja California, 9,965 tons, and Michoacan, 7,437 tons.

The area devoted to this crop is four thousand hectares. Most of the production is harvested in the months of March, May, August, October, November, and December.

Last year, the country exported fresh raspberries to 17 destinations, generating $485,369,000 dollars in revenue, i.e. 32 percent more than in the previous year.

Most of the purchases were made by the United States, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Canada.

This product was also sent to the United Arab Emirates, Belize, the Netherlands, Russia, Qatar, Ireland, Kuwait, Singapore, Kazakhstan, China, Japan, and Italy.

From 2014 to 2016, sales of this product increased by more than 130 million dollars, i.e. 36.7 percent.

In the first quarter of 2017, Mexico's raspberry exports amounted to 384.7 million dollars, i.e. 33 percent more than in the same period of the previous year.
