OTC-Holland project brings year-round supply of organic limes from Columbia
Organic limes from Colombia were not available at OTC before, till last week. The first limes arrived at the OTC bio handling center in Poeldijk, The Netherlands. "Due to the high demand of organic limes from the market, we started to develop this project. Thanks to the 35 certified local growers who are part of this project and a local exporter, we can provide our customers with organic limes throughout the year," Alexander Restrepo, Product Development Manager at OTC, said.
As part of a Colombian government subsidy program, the cooperative was set up 6 years ago to give small farmers a chance to be self-sufficient. Alexander assisted these growers in obtaining organic certification, with focus on delivering quality and continuity at a fair price.
Thanks to its favorable microclimate, the Tahiti limes have an intense green color and solid skin. The limes are to be packed in the 4 kg 'MmmBIO' boxes, which are especially designed for this project. They are year-round available in size 36 to 66.
Compost workshop
Because growers have to buy their compost from big companies, Alexander has recently provided a compost workshop in collaboration with the local exporter and an experienced organic coffee grower.
In this workshop, growers learned how to make organic compost themselves, so that they can be independent at a later stage. Meanwhile, the growers have started with a first pilot. A joint collaboration among the parts, will allow the growers to have a central place to make their process and store their compost.
