France : Increase in cucumber production

According to the Minister of Agriculture, there has been an increase in heated greenhouse acreage thanks to producers switching from other products to cucumbers (395 hectares, +1%/2015).

Increase is remarked in the Centre-West (177 hectares of heated greenhouses, +2%/2016) thanks to many greenhouses converting to cucumber production. The increase is particularly noted in the South of France where numerous tomato greenhouses, and to a lesser extent salad greenhouses, have switched to cucumber production this year (94 hectares between the South East and South West). Cucumber production potential in general is increasing thanks to the change in farming methods and more being grown on vertical wires, allowing for more yield.

French production is therefore estimated to increase by +2%/2016 with a 127,077 ton potential. The aim is for traders to be able to reduce the decrease in production over the picking/replanting period.
