"We intend to double the amount of hectares each year"

Dominican Republic: Fast growing pineapple production

"The Dominican Republic has more sunlight, less rain and fewer plagues that affect pineapple production. The Dominican Republic's logistics infrastructure, which consists of 7 international airports with direct routes all over the world, numerous maritime ports throughout the island and more competitive labour costs, are just some of the competitive advantages they have over other producing countries in the region,” starts Oscar Peña, director of FRUDEP.

It´s a young company that only started one and a half years ago and is located in Lomas Lindas, Pedro Brand, just 20 minutes from downtown Santo Domingo. At the Agroalimentaria in the Dominican Republic, Oscar presented their MD2 pineapples and their Bonita brand. “We have 37 hectares of MD2 pineapple production, but we intend in doubling the amount of hectares each year. Our production is very efficient, as we imported the technology, personnel and knowhow from Costa Rica, a country that has pioneered efficient, sustainable pineapple cultivation. We have our own packing facility, in which we take care of washing the fruit, disinfection, packing, storage and exportation by boat and air.”

Bonita pineapples have supply all year round. At this moment FRUDEP supplies local supermarket chains. “However, our pineapples are sweet and have a long shelf life, so they're very suitable for export. We are actively seeking for new export markets and clients in Europe, Israel, the lesser Antilles and maybe even Russia. We have begun trial shipments with potential clients and are very excited with the quality of our fruits and the demand they have generated.”

Oscar explains that there are many other pineapple producers in the Dominican Republic, however, most sell their fruits to the local informal markets and are not interested in certifying their plantations. At FRUDEP we strive to produce the best quality, fantastically sweet, MD2 pineapples while protecting our environment and practicing corporate social responsibility. On the commercial side, we sell our fruits under our registered brand, Bonita, or under our clients brand. Giving our partners the flexibility to market the fruit in the manner they consider best to satisfy end consumers. Our objective is to deliver fruits our customers trust, greatly enjoy, and are willing to look for in international supermarkets."
