Mexico: Tamaulipas will export more than 30,000 tons of lemons to the US and Europe

The Italian lemon harvest in Tamaulipas starts in 30 days. Tamaulipas is expected to export more than 30 thousand tons of this fruit to different markets, such as the United States and Europe.

Humberto Vazquez Ramirez, the head of the Phytozoosanitary, safety, agricultural and aquaculture offices of SENASICA in the state, said that they had begun the registration of more than 20 packing companies, which are dedicated to the shipment of citrus to different countries.

"This year the State Delegation of the Sagarpa hopes to issue more than 1,700 international certificates of export of this fruit to these companies."

He said that the presence of the Italian lemons produced by Tamaulipas had strengthened in world markets, as in the previous period they had achieved selling 28 thousand tons of this product.

"Exports continue to increase, which allows Tamaulipas to become the main exporter of this product in the international market."

He added that they expected to harvest than 100 thousand tons of this citrus this season, which would generate more than 100 thousand wages between pickers and packaging personnel.

"This product has an excellent quality and a great value because of the importance it generates in the specialized markets where it is sent, mainly to the United States."

He said that the economic spill generated by this commercial process strengthened the generation of new jobs in the state, as well as the modernization of the agricultural and value-added practices required for the certification demanded by this agricultural food sector.

He said that the citrus that wasn't exported was destined to the national juice industry, to make essential oils, simple juices, concentrates, and to obtain pectins for the export food industry.

He also said that Tamaulipas had about 40 thousand hectares devoted to citrus in the municipalities of Llera, Güemez, Padilla, Hidalgo, and Victoria, 4 thousand of which grow Italian lemons.
