Spain: Almeria invoices over 300 million Euro from peppers

Spain generates an annual turnover of more than 600 million Euro from peppers. This lies not only in domestic consumption, but also in exports to the European market, where it is one of the most demanded vegetables, as it is sold in all supermarkets as an essential product.

In recent years, the cultivation of peppers in Almeria has recorded a true "green revolution", since a great part of the production is carried out under biological control systems, without the use of any phytosanitary products; only beneficial insects are used for pest control. At the same time, the bio-agriculture company Nostoc has introduced a revolutionary product: liquid worm humus, which contains a high number of microorganisms, in addition to plant extracts and humic acids, which help restore the soil's natural microbial flora and improves the plant's uptake of nutrients. This advance has helped consolidate the sale of Spanish-grown peppers.

Peppers are one of the most consumed and cultivated vegetables in Spain, especially in the greenhouses of the Mediterranean and mainly in the province of Almeria, where it takes up an area of about 8,500 hectares; about 70% of the country's total greenhouse acreage is devoted to sweet peppers for fresh consumption.
