Willem Dijk senior:

"Good nispero sales this year, but not in the Netherlands"

Willem Dijk Senior has been trying for years to introduce Spanish nisperos to the Dutch market, but the adage "what the farmer does not know, he does not eat" remains firmly in place. The fruit is, however, very popular in Germany, especially with Turkish customers. "I have never sold this many nisperos."

Willem Dijk AGF, in partnership with Antonio Sanchez of Frutas Antonio Sanchis S.L., have found a supplier in the Callosa region, who regularly supplies him not only with nisperos, but also lemons and persimmons. The season began in early April and is now nearing its end.

The nispero - also known as a loquat or Japanese medlar - is an orange, egg-shaped fruit. Its flesh is juicy, aromatic and has a sweet-and-sour taste, slightly reminiscent of an apricot.

"There are often four pips in the large nisperos. It is easy to peel, but the peel is also edible", explains Willem, who has become a great fan of this fruit. "They must be nice and orange, then they are sweet and juicy. I am hoping to win over Dutch customers to this fruit. It really adds variety."
