Cees Bruyn, Staay Food Group:
“Broad demand for Egyptian red onions in the Netherlands”
The Egyptian red onion season was started mid-May for the Staay Food Group. “The start was two weeks earlier than last year, and volumes are at a similar level. Stocks of Dutch red onions have decreased considerably, so there’s plenty of room for the Egyptian ones on the market,” Cees Bruyn says.
The Staay Food Group focuses purely on Egyptian red onions for the onion import. “Considering the situation in the Netherlands, the import of yellow onions is currently not a factor,” the importer says. “We can continue with red onions from Egypt until mid-August. We offer the red onions in big bags of 1,250 kilograms and bales of 10 kilograms in the sizes 40-60 mm, 60-80 mm and 80-100 mm.”
“We sell the red onions to a broad range of customers,” Cees says. He sees cultivation in Egypt professionalising at rapid speed. “It can be seen in the onions, but also in other products. I think it’s amazing how much progress the country’s currently making. The climatological circumstances are ideal for it.”
