Italy: Natura Iblea's Paniere Bio initiative

How do freshly-harvested vegetables taste? Are they different from those found in supermarkets? The Paniere Bio initiative was created precisely to answer these questions.

Paniere Bio was created by Natura Iblea, a famous Sicilian export company and a leader in the production of high-quality organic vegetables.

"Over the years, we have realised how the chain connecting producers and consumers is very long. The produce often reaches our tables after very long journeys. We thought about the importance of shortening this chain by developing direct and online sales channels."

But Paniere Bio is not only an e-commerce platform. As explained by project manager Andrea Giadone, it is also a group of people who believe in the values of such an ambitious project.

The company focuses on social solidarity, so much so that it was rewarded with the 2017 Welfare Index PMI for the work it carried out to reconnect immigrant families and favour social integration with language courses and much more.

The company is located in Ispica, south-eastern Sicily, one of the leading Italian areas for produce cultivation and one of the main producers in Europe of organic produce.

"Paniere Bio's mission is to provide an alternative to long-distance export model so people can discover just how good freshly-harvested organic produce is!"

Paniere is an organic produce, flour and preserve home delivery service and is getting increasingly popular. "Our clients are the best way to promote the service and can explain just how good our products are."

"We produce organic fruit and vegetables as well as flour, oil, jams and honey. Delivery is free for orders over €13 in most of Sicily. If we cannot reach our customers personally, delivery costs are available at www.panierebio.com".

It is also possible to order from the website, where you can do your shopping according to your needs.

"We can meet all demands, especially since we can grow almost everything here in Sicily. We are the first European producers of organic carrots and are also among the leading exporters of courgettes, melons, tomatoes, peppers, lemons, oranges, green beans, etc."

"To us, organic doesn't just mean respecting consumers, but also the environment. That is why we practice crop alternation and rotation - otherwise, after decades of intensive cultivation, the land would turn into a desert."

"Our carrot fields are proof of this: there are poppies, wild herbs, insects and small animals, meaning the land is respected and loved."

"We believe in the importance of socio-educational projects, that's why we support local events and all other initiatives supporting healthy eating habits. We know it is important to chose our fuel and not just pick up what supermarkets choose for us."

The "Ugly yet Tasty" campaign also started this year. "Consumers are used to eating with their eyes - they don't choose that tastes good, but rather what looks good. But nature doesn't work that way - there are many fruits of different shapes, colours and sizes. It doesn't mean that products that look different taste less good."

"We try to push our clients not to waste food but to choose it in harmony with the Earth's natural processes and, most of all, we set an example. As a company, we always have to deal with leftover produce but we don't throw it away - in a country where hundreds of immigrants arrive everyday, there are many organisations that help us not to waste food."

"For example, we support 12 group homes, 3 Caritas centres and other associations. We supply them with food that would otherwise go to waste because it doesn't have the shape or grade required."
