Will Teeuwen, Teboza:

“One of the flightiest Dutch asparagus seasons ever”

The Dutch asparagus season is officially entering its final month. According to Will Teeuwen from Teboza, this year has seen one of the flightiest asparagus seasons ever. “The weather has made itself known throughout Europe. This made it very difficult to match supply and demand. There was no telling what the market would do as a result. Sometimes supply wasn’t quite enough, and sometimes it was a bit more than expected, but prices would be higher than expected as well.”

Daughter Femke Teeuwen

“The preseason was plain disappointing. The regular season that followed was also a bit below par. But the positive thing is that, all in all, more kilograms were sold, so consumers ate more asparagus, although we would’ve liked to have seen higher prices,” Will continues. “Demand is currently good, but the supply is too high. The coming week will see some promotional actions as well, but that could result in some higher prices. And we’ll have to consume our own asparagus, because south and east Germany started their proper peak last week, so they’ll have plenty of domestic asparagus.”
