Marcel van Bruggen, ABC Logistics:

“Around the summer months, problems always increase in Calais”

Multiple lorry drivers were beset by migrants on Monday morning. And that is remarkable, after months without incident. There were also reports of slashed tires, damages to windows, and one driver was wounded in the face after rocks were thrown at him. French media talk about the first organised attack after the dismantling of ‘the jungle’ in October 2016.

Marcel van Bruggen from ABC Logistics confirmed the problems. “We’ve noticed the transport via the Channel Tunnel is becoming much riskier. The problems increase around the summer months every year. We anticipate this by sending fewer lorries through the tunnel, and more via the ferry. It’s important to keep a close eye on the situation. Our company has learned much from the past: we can switch fairly quickly. The speed with which you’re informed makes or breaks everything — in the transport sector, people fortunately continuously inform each other.” Companies with large fleets that are dependent on the tunnel before they can reach the ferry are at greater risk of skirmishes and delays, according to Marcel.

The fresh produce trade is keeping fairly out of range, although Marcel remains non-committal. “If these blockades continue, that’ll definitely have an influence on the trade. It could result in a situation in which lorries are forced to leave earlier than usual, the time for loading and unloading decreases, and pressure on ferries increases.” However, he isn’t worried a race for the ferry will happen. “Thanks to block bookings, that’s fairly under control by now.”
