"Spain: "Stable Verna lemon campaign - unlike last year's"

The weather conditions have been ideal to obtain a good lemon production, especially in the case of the Verna, which is stronger than the Primafiori. However, it is still too early to give figures on a campaign that is still open. "In the case of Amefruits, we usually have an average production of about 7,000 tonnes, of which 35% correspond to Verna lemons," states Víctor Martínez, product manager of Amefruits.

The countries of the European Union are their main destination, "with orders arriving in a maximum of 72 hours," affirms Martínez. "We stand out by the fact that we don't apply any chemical treatments to the fruit once it has been harvested, thus adapting the product to the needs of our customers," points out the representative of Amefruits.

The first lemon containers from Argentina and South Africa, the main competitors for the Spanish Verna lemon, will soon start arriving in Europe. "However, those lemons have to withstand longer shipments, so they are not as fresh when they reach the markets," explains Martínez, adding that "in our case, given the proximity, we don't need any post-harvest chemical treatments for the lemons to arrive fresh."
