"We've decided to wait a week, to see what happens"

Spain: Paraguayo oversupply results in stagnating sales

"We have decided to wait a week to see what happens," states Ramón Sales, of Shakespeare Foods. This company announced that "prices started very high, at about 4 Euro per kilo." However, in a short period of time, they have fallen to 1.60 Euro per kilo, approximately. "What has happened is that people realised that the early varieties generated a lot of money, so everyone started planting them and now the market is saturated," explains Sales.

Many companies are currently waiting to see how the markets behave. "At the moment, our activities have almost ground to a halt, with only 8 pallets today," explains Sales. So far, this Valencian company has sold about 100,000 kilos, approximately. "This is only a tenth of what we sold last year in total. Considering that for us, in stonefruit, the strong months are May, June and July, we are going a bit slow this season," affirms Sales.
