Consumer interest for organic chopped salads increases

Chopped salads and organic foods. Braga Fresh Family Farms of Soledad, CA. hopes to hone in on these two food trends with its Josie’s Organics salad line. Braga recently debuted the line to the Canadian market at the 2017 CPMA Annual Convention and Trade Show.

“We started the chopped salad line about one year ago in our new state of the art salad plant,” says Heather Fuller of Braga. “The category was lacking in organic salads. There are a lot of salads available, but there weren’t a lot of organic salads in the growing chopped category. There was an opportunity as an organics company to put forward an organic salad not only with the right flavor profile but increasing the nutritional profile as well.”

Nutrition is key
Josie’s was first introduced with the Organic Sweet Kale Chopped Salad and Organic Asian Chopped Salad and more recently added the Southwest Chopped Salad. “Our salads aren’t just lettuce based—there’s cabbage, broccoli, kale, some other items to increase the nutritional profile along with flavour,” says Fuller, who adds that Braga will shortly introduce two more blends within the coming months.

In part, the Josie’s line helps round out consumer’s interest in ready to use salads. “There’s a lot of competition and established names in the category that have focused primarily on conventional salads but are starting to do organics as well,” Fuller says. However, what positions Braga uniquely is that it grows the majority of the produce featured inside its salads. “We grow the majority of the product in our salads and we are proud of that fact.” she adds.
