Oron Ziv, Befresh Europe: “Taking the grape season day by day”

The Israeli grape season started a bit later than usual this year, according to Oron Ziv from Befresh Europe. “We’ll be harvesting this entire week. The first small volumes have been exported by air, and the first containers will be shipped tomorrow. It’s looking good so far, the only issue is the high prices on the local market.”

Niche
“Grapes are a narrow niche market,” Oron continues. “The new Israeli season starts right after the Indian season and just before the European season from Italy and Spain. India started two weeks earlier, but they’re staying later as well. Quality isn’t as good as the Israeli though.”

Market
“The container we’re shipping tomorrow will only arrive at its destination in ten days time, and it’s difficult to predict what the market will be like then. Sizes are all right, and the local market is paying good prices."

"However, it wouldn’t be good if everyone sent their grapes to the local market.” Befresh Europe sells mainly early varieties. “The early sweet is a very good variety, but it all depends on the market. We mostly send out grapes to wholesalers, but it all depends on the free market.”

Quality
During the grape season, there’s no pressure to export after two or three weeks. “Quality will drop, but we’ll just have to wait and see how far and how quickly it will drop. At the start of the season, prices are around 16 euro, but we’ve known them to drop to about 5 euro."

"We take the season day by day, week by week. We used to sent some grapes to Russia, but they can’t afford our prices right now. They’re now getting Indian grapes, because those are cheap. We cannot compete with those prices,” Oron concludes.
