Belgian asparagus prices slumping again

Asparagus prices recovered around Mother’s Day, but now prices have dropped again, according to Lieve Verheyden from Fruit Vandepoel. “Asparagus are very cheap at the moment. We’re currently selling them around 4.70 euro per kilogram. Prices started dropping considerably again late last week.”

Large volumes
She indicates that the high production in particular causes the low prices. “Volumes are large because of the warm weather. Demand is fair to good, we can’t complain about sales.” Prices haven’t been very high yet this season. “If you don’t count the start of the season, the high point was about 8 euro in recent months. And that’s the selling prices.”

“As long as the weather stays warm, volumes will continue to be harvested. We’ll have an enormous amount of asparagus. I don’t expect prices to drop much lower. I think purchase prices from the grower won’t go far below 3.50 euro.”
