Italy: Orders for organic lemons up 60%

"In recent years, our customers have been asking us for this type of lemon because of its more natural production," states Lucy Maturana, head of sales at Azienda Agricola Ingenieri di Palermo. "However, we continue to maintain part of the production of conventional lemons (Verna at the moment) for those customers who want to stay in the same line of business."

The average volume of lemons they have is 5,000 tonnes per year, which they have started exporting tentatively to other European Union countries. "We are at that point in which we are starting to make ourselves known and we are open to shipping our organic lemons even outside of Europe," adds Maturana.

The price difference between organic and conventional is something worth noting. "One kilo of our organic lemons costs 0.95 Euro, compared to 0.65 of the conventional at the moment," explains Maturana. The fact is that labour costs are much higher, and this is reflected in the price. "But our customers know what they want, so they don't see it as a major inconvenience," says Maturana.
