“Product increase and cold causes dropping strawberry prices in Belgium”

According to Jan Engelen from Coöperatie Hoogstraten, the Belgian strawberry prices have been under pressure since late last week. “This is naturally not good for growers, but it’s not all that unusual compared to previous years. It’s not the first time prices are below one euro. Prices were very good up till last week, but they started dropping as of last weekend.”

Snow
Jan mentions several causes. “There was quite a bit more production, and besides, the majority of Northern Europe had bad and cold weather. Norway even had snow last week! Because of this, consumption drops, and therefore sales also drop.” Supply was large last week. “In total, it will amount to two million kilogram this week, but that’s the same every year. Additionally, much Spanish product is still in the way. That also affects our sales.”

Prices will be better when the sun starts shining. “We need good, stable summer weather for the market to recover.”
