Honduras to export a second container of sweet potatoes to Spain

At the beginning of this year, Spanish entrepreneurs toured Honduras in search of sweet potato and Hass avocado plantations in different regions of Honduras, such as Ocotepeque, Comayagua, El Paraiso, Intibuca, Francisco Morazan, and Santa Barbara.

According to the Minister of Economic Development, Arnaldo Castillo, the second container of Honduran sweet potatoes that will be exported to Malaga, Spain, is ready to leave Comayagua towards Puerto Cortes.

This export is the product of Minister Castillo's visit to Spain last October; a visit he made to position Honduras' agricultural products in the Spanish market.

"This visit is yielding very positive results for the country, Honduras has already sent a first container of sweet potatoes to the port of Malaga, and the country will ship a second container to Spain on May 22. In addition, we hope to be sending a third container in less than thirty days, as this product has had a good acceptance in the European market," Minister Castillo stated.

The official said that they wanted to continue exporting sweet potatoes at this pace so that next year they could supply the Spanish market throughout the 12 months of the year, as the entrepreneurs who are importing this product are satisfied with its quality.

In his visit to the Iberian country, Minister Castillo met with businessmen interested in importing agricultural products, such as potatoes and Hass avocados. He also held talks with a co-investment chain, and met with authorities of the Spanish Government to publicize the quality of Honduran products, their benefits, and the facilities provided by the State of Honduras to boost foreign investment.

The intensive work being done by President Juan Orlando and his team to promote national products, led to the first commercial operation between entrepreneurs from the Tropical Axarquia company of Malaga, Spain, and the Government of Honduras, which was represented by the head of economic development.

Minister Castillo said that Government's efforts were bearing fruits, as they have positioned several Honduran products in international markets, such as Spain, increased their exportable supply, contributed to strengthen Honduras' economy, and generated jobs in the agricultural sector.
