The NORDFROST deep-freeze house in Bremerhaven's fishing port, which the logistics company acquired in 2001 as part of a company acquisition together with eight other coldstores in Germany, will be comprehensively modernized with the forthcoming construction project.
The middle section of the building complex, which runs along the Kühlhaus quay, now consists of an old cooling house, which, with its structural height, protrudes beyond the right-hand and left-hand side of the building. The upper floors of this oldest and largest part of the building are accessible via elevators, which are not easy to use today. The large imposing building is no longer economically viable, which is why NORDFROST has now decided to demolish this middle section of the coldstore and replace it with a modern new building. As a result, it is possible to increase the total capacity in Bremerhaven by more than 50%, namely to 28,000 from currently 18,000 pallet spaces. As part of the construction project, a new refrigeration plant will be installed, which will be able to cool the entire site and improve its energy efficiency.
The approximately 14 million euro conversion shows a commitment of the company to the Bremerhaven location and the long-term site security for the existing and additional employees.
NORDFROST, market leader in deep-freeze logistics in Germany, will invest some 200 million euros in various locations during the years 2017 to 2019, thereby increasing the number of palettes of 650,000 by 200,000. The company is currently building a 35,000-storey deep-freeze house with meat processing and shock chillers in Wilhelmshaven. In Zerbst (Saxony-Anhalt), a production of ice cubes for end consumers, which is in operation in July of this year, is being developed. Construction work in Bremerhaven is also scheduled to start this year.
