Italy: The situation at Centro Agroalimentare Torino

"Volumes are abundant at CAAT (Centro Agro-Alimentare Torino) but it's not easy to place the produce on the market. It is not a question of high prices, however, as the lack of sales is due to the bad weather. We're hoping the situation will improve as the weather gets warmer and people manage to get to their local market," reports a CAAT operator.

Vegetables
Tomato prices are finally dropping after weeks of being high: lots of local beefsteak tomatoes are becoming available as well as quantities from central and southern regions, with prices varying between €1 and €1.50/kg. Date and ribbed tomatoes sell at around €2.00/kg, while bunch tomatoes are going through a moment of crisis (€0.50-0.60/kg) and the Spanish campaign is ending.

Both black and purple aubergines sell at €0.60-0.70/kg. Supplies from Sicily are over, it is now the season of produce form central Italy.

The price of peppers has also dropped to €1.40-1.50/kg max. The Spanish campaign is over and produce is now coming from Fondi, Latina and the Netherlands.

As regards green asparagus, quantities are now lower, especially from Puglia. There is local produce available, but it is mainly directed to other sales channels. Prices at CAAT are of €250-3.50/kg depending on grade. Volumes are lower because it is the end of the campaign and because of the bad weather that characterised the past few weeks.

White asparagus from Veneto are sold at €4.50-5.50/kg.

New potato prices dropped to €0.55-0.60/kg. Supplies from Sicily are over while produce from central Italy is still available.

Fennel is not doing so good and lettuce is going through a moment of crisis.

The situation is critical for melons too, as the few ones that are sold sell at €0.20-0.60/kg.

Candonga Top Quality strawberry prices vary between €1.30 and €2.50/kg, while the local produce reaches €3.50/kg. Soft fruit is still a niche product and the local produce is still not available. Cherries are available, though so far quality has been excellent only for a variety from Spain.

Fruit

Peaches and nectarines are now available. Flavour is good and they sell at between €0.70 and €1.50/kg depending on grade. They come mainly from Spain and Puglia. Nectarine prices are always 10-15 cents more expensive as there are lower volumes available.

As it's the end of the campaign, pear prices have also increased, especially for the Abate variety, which reaches €2.20/kg. Quantities from Argentina and South Africa are arriving.

Apple prices were expected to skyrocket but they didn't. Quotations are rather stable, except for the larger grades, which are 5 cents more expensive. The local kiwi campaign is ending and those from New Zealand sell at €2.40-2.80/kg.

There are still a few Spanish Navels available and the first quantities of citrus fruit are coming in from South Africa.

Finally, there are significant differences between branded and unbranded produce - Del Monte pineapples sell at €1.70/kg while unbranded ones sell at €80. Chiquita bananas sell at €1.25/kg, while unbranded ones sell at €0.90/kg.
