Brussels sprouts grower Daniel Adams named Young Grower of the Year

Victorian vegetable grower Daniel Adams has been presented with the AUSVEG Young Grower of the Year Award, sponsored by Dow AgroSciences, at the Hort Connections 2017 National Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner.

“Daniel is a third generation Brussels sprouts grower and an innovative and highly respected figure in the Victorian vegetable industry. He is a very worthy recipient of this award,” said AUSVEG CEO James Whiteside.

“Daniel has a focus on continuing the sustainability and profitability of his business through the implementation of new growing procedures, harvesting techniques and packing technology. As well as this, he understands the need for fresh and innovative marketing techniques to increase the appeal of the Brussels sprout.

“He has also been heavily involved in educating the local community by opening up the farm to the public and informing people about his growing operations and his products, which has had the added benefit of increasing his farm gate sales.”

The Young Grower of the Year Award is supported by Dow AgroSciences, which is a leading provider of horticultural products and services in Australia and works towards developing the growth of the Australian horticulture sector.

The award is presented to a vegetable or potato grower who has applied excellent business acumen and innovation on-farm, while also demonstrating a high level of commitment to the wider industry, and participating in industry groups and community activities.

“In addition to his work within his business, Daniel participated on a vegetable levy-funded international mission to the U.S.A., which rekindled and refocused his passion for the industry by learning from international leaders in horticulture. His experiences highlight the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone to build leadership and development skills in the vegetable industry,” said Mr Whiteside.

“I congratulate Daniel on his award and his commitment to the improvement of our industry. The Australian horticulture industry needs more young people involved, and it is important that we recognise the achievements of young growers such as Daniel to ensure we foster our next generation of leaders.”

The Hort Connections 2017 National Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner honoured growers and other members of the Australian horticulture industry for outstanding achievements. The dinner was the capstone event of Hort Connections 2017, which drew over 2,500 local and international delegates for the premier event in Australian horticulture.
