China: Tongnan lychees go on sale at high price
Influenced by the weather, volumes of Tongnan lychees are down compared to last year. This caused a higher price of around 30 RMB per kg. The main production region for the lychees that enter the market now is Hainan. A limited offer of only 3 varieties is available.
The first variety 'Sanyuehong' is limited in production volume. The other two, more exquisite varieties, 'Feizixiao' and 'Baitangying' are only available in even smaller volumes, with an even higher price on the market. The 'Sanyuehong' lychees are regarded as an early-season variety. Even though they are entering the market later now than in previous years, they taste a bit more astringent because of the lack of sunshine. 'Feizixiao' and 'Baitangying', belong to the category of early-mid-season varieties. They have become available on the market earlier than usual.
Because of the suboptimal weather this year, mainly in the form of strongly fluctuating temperatures, almost all fruits are going to market later than in previous years. Additionally, labour costs have increased and the production volume is lower than usual. All these reasons together have led to a high lychee price. According to estimates, the large-scale market entrance of the lychees will be at the end of May or the beginning of June. When that time comes, the wholesale price will go down and the retail price will also recover to a certain extent.
