Official data from the Jinhua Produce Wholesale Market showed that, in March and April this year, the sales volume of Jinhua pineapples was significantly better than last year.
From 1, March to 30, April, the total volume of Jinhua pineapples sold in the market reached 539 truckloads, 101.1% higher than the 268 truckloads from the same period last year. Such a dramatic increase mainly came from the bigger production. In previous years, the major growing area was only in Hainan Province, but because of the quick sales in the market, more pineapples have been grown in Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan and the total yields have gone up.
The second factor contributing to the rising sales is the low price. Recently the prices of fruits have gone up in general and pineapple varieties with a kilo price lower than 4 yuan are difficult to find, so Jinhua pineapples attracted a lot of purchasers with their low price. The last factor is the improvement of packaging which lowered the percentage of damaged fruits during transportation. Over recent years, the packaging cost has accounted for a decreasing percentage of the total cost, so pineapples are now packed in boxes instead of in bulk. Thus, there are less damaged ones during transportation, and the freshness and quality of the fruits are both improved. The overall result of these factors is the increasing sales.
