Mexican lime prices and trading margins

In April 2017, the price paid to producers of Mexican limes (sour) in producing areas, wholesale and consumer prices in several cities in Mexico, and the trading margins of this citrus from Colima in selected cities were as follows:

Prices paid to producers ($/ kg)
In April, the highest average price paid to producers in the field, collection centers, and packing houses in the biggest Mexican lime producing entities in the country, was 13.30 $/kg and was observed in the citrus region of Tecoman, Colima, while the lowest price, 9.92 $/kg, took place in the state of Guerrero, Guerrero. According data from SIPROLIMEX-Colima, between January 2016 and April 2017, the behavior of the average monthly price paid to the producer in the citrus area of Colima was atypical, as the highest price was reached in the month of April and the lowest price in the month of October 2016. During the January-April 2017 quarter, the lowest price was reached in January, 8.50 $/kg, and by April it increased to 13.30 $/kg. 

Wholesale prices ($/kg)
The highest monthly average wholesale price, 37.44 $/kg, which was observed in the Union de Comerciantes La Paz, Bajaj California South, and the lowest price, 14.50 $/kg, which was observed in the Central Market of Leon, Guanajuato. (SNIIM)

Retail prices for consumers ($/kg)
The highest average monthly consumer price, 41.35 $/kg, was detected in the supermarket chains and traditional stores located in the city of Tijuana, Baja California, while the lowest price, 35.47 $/kg, was recorded in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. (INEGI)

Trading margins (%)
The highest marketing margin, 211%, was located in the city of Tijuana, Baja California, and the lowest one, 167%, in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco.

The trading margin, i.e. the difference between the monthly average retail price in supermarket chains and traditional stores located in the city of La Paz, Baja California South, 41.35 $/kg, and the average monthly price paid to the producer in the citrus region of Tecoman, Colifornia, 13.30 $/kg, amounted to 28.05 $/Kg. 

The lowest trading was 16.25 $/ kg, as consumers in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, were charged an average of 22.17 $/k, and producers in the citrus region of Tecoman, Colima, were paid 13.30 $ / kg. 

The margin is calculated as the percentage made by intermediaries over final consumer prices.

Production volumes (in tons)
According to SIPROLIMEX-COLIMA, in April (2017) the main Mexican lime producing states had a total production volume of 21,500 tons. Production was led by the state of Michoacan with 10,000 tons (47%), followed by Colima with 5,250 tons (24%),and Oaxaca, which also contributed 5,250 tons (24%), and the state of Guerrero with 1,050 tons (3%).
