Hans Maagendans, Banafood:

“Weather plays into the banana market’s hands”

Banana sales are as yet going well this year. “Figures show more bananas were sold during the first quarter,” says Hans Maagendans from banana ripening plant Banafood Services GmbH from Straelen, Germany.

“The production in South America isn’t very high yet right now. We’ve had fewer arrivals from Colombia. Supply from Ecuador has been delayed a bit, but will be at a good level within a few weeks. Peru also has some problems with their production, and that has resulted in more demand for organic bananas.”

“All in all, these are favourable market developments, and I definitely expect a good market until Whitsun. The chilly weather is playing into the banana market’s hands, because the availability of other fruit is limited. Because of this, the banana prices are at a decent level.”
